| Centrally located in
prosperous and productive Linn County, on the east side of the Willamette
Valley, Lebanon stands in the forefront among Oregon's half-dozen fastest
growing communities. Since 1940, Lebanon's population has
increased from 2,729 to
nearly 13,000 people . Located 90 miles south of Portland on
US-20, the east-west highway that spans continental America,
Lebanon is readily accessible from all points of the compass. In 1847, Jerimah Ralston and other pioneers settled on the rich prairies, 12 miles east of the Willamette River. Jerimah bought a log cabin, and this marked the start for the future settlement in Lebanon. Plotting the town in 1851, Ralston named Lebanon after his Tennessee birthplace. The first homes were made out of logs. Stores were established and wheat raising was begun on the prairies. For more than half a century much of what is greater Lebanon was waving wheat fields. Lebanon was incorporated as a city in 1878. The mayor was Col. C.B. Montague who had been an officer in the British Army and later with the United States Army over a period of 40 years. A growing city, with wide, tree-shaded streets, Lebanon still holds much of its small town charm. |
